A healthy gut is the foundation of animal well-being, growth and performance. Yet, many challenges—from feed quality to disease pressure—can disrupt the delicate balance of gut microbes. Microbes do more than coexist—they interact with each other and with the animal itself. Some bacteria adhere to gut linings, while others are absorbed by immune cells, directly impacting the host. Others produce metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which influence digestion, immune function, inflammation and energy metabolism. A well-balanced microbiome promotes overall health, whereas an imbalance can lead to digestive and immune challenges.

Gut health is more than just good or bad bacteria

Gut health is not simply a battle between good and bad bacteria. Some microbes traditionally considered harmful can have beneficial roles under certain conditions, while those typically seen as beneficial may cause issues if they overgrow or end up in the wrong place. The key is maintaining a stable microbial balance that supports animal health and performance.

Many factors—including temperature, feed quality, hygiene and antibiotic use—can disrupt this balance. AGPs, once widely used to promote growth, have been particularly problematic. By eliminating a broad spectrum of bacteria—including beneficial ones—AGPs can impair nutrient absorption, increase inflammation and weaken the immune system. Their long-term use also contributes to antibiotic resistance, making infections harder to treat. These concerns have led to AGP bans in several countries, increasing demand for effective, natural alternatives.

Phytogenics: a natural approach to a healthier gut

Phytogenics offer a targeted, multi-faceted approach to modulating gut microbiota. Their benefits extend across the digestive tract:
