The Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), the approval authority for Norwegian seafood exporters and leading partner for the country’s seafood export industry, has a long-standing history of bringing high quality seafood products to international markets. Now, the brand is leveraging its influence and industry research to reinforce the importance of ethically sourced seafood in a healthy, well-balanced diet.
A series of reports released over the last three years – from the NSC and other global initiatives like the Blue Food Assessment – have revealed that seafood demand is set to double by 2050, driven largely by projected growth in Asia and Africa. Other findings have indicated that blue foods rank higher in nutritional value than terrestrial, animal-sourced foods – and with over one in three adults in the world being overweight – experts continue to flag increased seafood consumption as a critical part of the solution to the world’s dietary challenges.
Norway’s natural landscape – including its extended coastline stretching to the North Pole and stable, cold-water temperatures – provides the ideal conditions for year-round breeding and farming. This unique environment underpins the country’s ongoing success as a global supplier of blue foods and continues to serve as the foundation of its large-scale aquaculture industry. In fact, Norwegian products are rising in popularity – with Atlantic salmon being considered a favourite dish worldwide and over 2.9 million tonnes of seafood being exported at a value of NOK 151.4 billion in 2022.
As a pioneering seafood producer and supplier, Norway is perfectly positioned to drive awareness around the health benefits of aquatic food and faces an ocean of opportunity to guide the global industry’s response to the latest research findings – empowering consumers to make conscious decisions about the food on their plates.
In line with this, the NSC is sharing signature health benefits of natural, Norwegian seafood, showcasing the unique richness and quality of the country’s many blue food products:
